How to change a baby's diaper

Children have sensitive skin and therefore the dirty diaper must be changed as soon as possible, in order not to cause skin irritation. In the case of the newborn, we normally change 8-10 diapers a day. Whether they are disposable diapers or reusable diapers, the method of changing a diaper is the same. There is no standard method from which you must not deviate! We'll show you the steps you should follow in the beginning and, over time, you'll develop your own diaper changing method, knowing some basic rules.

Some babies become fussy and constantly moving during diaper changes. It is useful to distract them by offering them a toy in their hand or talking to the child. The most difficult is around the age of 4 months when the baby has learned to roll from side to side and is constantly eager to explore.

How often should the diaper be changed?

The baby's diaper should be changed after each sitting, as soon as possible. Normally the urine is completely absorbed so the diaper does not need to be changed unless its size and weight hinders the baby's movements. However, check the absorbent properties of the diaper, putting your hand on the inner surface of a diaper full of urine should not feel wet.

How to change a dirty disposable diaper

  1. We place the baby on its back, on a disposable pad or towel - if the diaper is full, it is possible to dirty the area under the baby.

  1. Unfold the side flaps of the diaper and fold them so they don't stick to the baby's skin.

  1. Lift the front of the diaper. Babies often urinate during diaper changes, so it's helpful to cover their genital area with a towel or washcloth if you don't want to get everything wet, especially for boys.

  1. Use the front of the diaper to remove most of the dirt from your baby's bottom.

  1. Fold the diaper in half and place it under the baby, between the baby's dirty skin and the clean bottom. Do this by lifting both of the baby's ankles with one hand and placing the folded diaper under him with the other hand.

Which diaper is best for my baby?

The high price of the diaper does not guarantee that it will be well tolerated by your child. Every baby is unique, some tolerate any type of diaper very well, others need extra absorbent diapers, some babies have a sensitivity to the materials used in the manufacture of the diaper developing slight redness when wearing certain diapers. "Velcro" side fastening flaps are more convenient and effective, especially when you frequently open the diaper to check whether it is clean or not, compared to tape flaps.

Although it seems difficult at first, changing the diaper very quickly becomes a quick and efficient operation, a routine that you will follow for 1-2 years. It's just one of the challenges your little newborn has to offer! see more
