Protect your baby

it's cold outside: how to protect

your baby from the cold.

We all know that the cold in the winter can do real damage to the skin, making it dry and flaky and also causing chapped lips. Did you know that these skin effects can happen to your baby too?

Cold weather can cause dry skin and inflammation in your baby's skin, as a rule, it causes reddened and rough cheeks and hands, which gives a feeling of irritation that causes discomfort.

As babies' mouths are often covered in drool, they may also have chapped lips (because saliva breaks down the top layer of skin).

Our instinct is to snuggle them and keep them warm, however this can make things worse.

Dress warm in winter, but not too much

"We actually went outside with Etta for the first time when she was 10 days old in January and I was nervous because it was so cold," says Romily.

“We were going in and out of stores when she started screaming. I took her to a cafe to feed and change her. When I was undressing her I saw that she was sweating. Even though I now know it's not a big deal, at the time I felt awful for making her so uncomfortable!”

Babies can overheat easily, which is not only uncomfortable but can lead to dry skin and other skin conditions.

How to protect your baby from the outside elements without overheating

Dressing babies in thin, breathable clothes is a good start. Cotton is a more breathable fabric than, for example, wool, nylon and polyester. Opt for clothes like skinny leggings instead of blue jeans.

This not only allows for more air in contact with the skin, but also makes it easier to change clothes, depending on the ambient temperature. For example, if you go to the supermarket, you can remove a layer of clothing to ensure that your baby does not overheat.

Make sure your baby wears a hat and gloves, but check regularly that these areas are not too hot.

Keeping your baby well hydrated is essential to avoid skin problems. Use an unscented moisturizer (you can also find baby lip balms) and reduce the number of showers. Too many baths can strip the skin of its natural oils, causing it to dry out.

This can be worrying – how can we keep our babies clean if we can't bathe them as often?

This is where WaterWipes come in. Comprised of 99.9% water and a drop of fruit seed extract, they are the world's purest cleansing option and the number one choice for newborn skin.

For young children try the new WaterWipes with SoapBerry. Composed of water and a natural herbal extract, they offer the same purity as newborn wipes, but with an extra cleaning touch – perfect for dirty hands, face and bottoms.
