How can diaper rash be treated?

Red, irritated skin with small bumps or crusts in the diaper area are a common problem in babies. How to properly care for a fluffy baby bottom, find out in the lines below.

Rashes, which can appear on the baby's skin under the diaper, are small inflammations that can spread from the buttocks to the genital and groin area and can cause babies unpleasant pain.

The factors that cause these painful inflammations for little ones are humidity and heat, which softens the baby's sensitive skin and weakens its protective function. This makes the skin vulnerable to bacteria and other fungi, for which this environment is most conducive to growth.

How to prevent diaper rash

It is known that prevention is better than later treatment. With these tips you can protect your baby's sensitive skin:

The best way to prevent irritation is to change your baby's diaper regularly. Especially if your baby's skin is sensitive, diapers should be changed more often so that too much moisture does not build up and the skin cannot breathe. At each diaper change, the bottom should be washed with soap and water, this is a very important rule.

In order for the air to circulate under the diaper, it must not be very fixed, stuck to the skin. That way, heat and moisture can't build up under the diaper, irritating the bottom.

In principle, water is enough to clean the area around the diaper. For easier and faster cleaning, when there is no access to a water source, wet wipes for the sensitive skin of the baby can be used, with chamomile extract and without perfumes or other chemical compounds. Before putting on the diaper, make sure the skin is completely dry.

How to treat irritations that occur

Diaper rash is a common condition among babies and is not dangerous as long as it is treated properly. Otherwise, there is a risk of worsening symptoms.

Even if you take great care of your baby's bottom, there are situations when irritations can occur. They are manifested by reddening of the skin, as well as by the appearance of discomfort, sensitivity and pain. Here are some tips to help you avoid diaper rash:

  • To soothe superficial skin irritations, treat the affected areas with wound healing creams. This will calm the inflammation and speed up healing.

  • If you notice that the baby is irritated very often, change the brand of diapers used - some diapers can cause allergies, due to the substances in them.

  • Give your baby diaper breaks so the skin can relax and air dry. This is easiest to do outdoors in the summer, but you can also dare to do it indoors on a blanket.

  • Do not use chemical additives for cleaning, but wash the area only with water, special baby soap or calendula oil and a soft sponge.

  • After cleaning the skin, dry very well: either by wiping with a towel or with a hair dryer on a low setting, at a distance of 40-50 cm, to the side.

  • Then apply a zinc-based skin protectant or baby cream that contains calendula. In the case of wet irritations, you can use a cream with almond oil, zinc oxide or a rich cream with chamomile, sulfur and lanolin instead.

  • If the skin has a severe rash, take the child to a pediatrician.
