Giving up the diaper: when is the time?

Some parents want to make this transition as soon as possible, even before the child's first birthday.

This attempt can be successful when the child already has certain routines. For example, if he has a stool after every lunch, and the sphincter control is obtained through repeated associations (similar to the Pavlovian experiment), without there being an understanding of the phenomenon on the part of the little one, then this could be a sign that he is ready for the transition gradual from diaper to potty.

Since there is a lack of awareness of the change itself, it is very possible that this maneuver will not bear fruit immediately, will not be permanent or will be accompanied by "accidents".

When the children are ready to give up the diaper

Sphincter control is usually obtained only when a child understands very well what is explained or shown to him. Sometimes earlier, sometimes later, but in the vast majority of cases beyond the age of 2, most children obtain sphincter control. The example of the family and the explanations that the child receives are extremely important, without being scolded or warned, the repeated attempts to get him to try another way to use the toilet, such as the reducer or the potty.

It is a method very often used by parents, but especially by grandparents, that of leaving the child without a diaper, during the warm season, to try potty training. Potties with various accessories (colored or sound) or underwear with different characters are usually bought, but this approach almost never works.

Explanations or personal examples are the solutions that help in the long term. In any of the situations, the desired result is delayed from the very beginning, but from the moment a child asks to use the potty, the parents no longer have to use the diaper. Some of the parents prefer the safer and more comfortable option, although especially at the beginning, the little one notifies the entourage at the last moment and thus it often happens that he escapes.

When children manage to have total control over urination

Enuresis is defined as the lack of bladder control, a natural aspect of small children. After the age of 5, most children have full control over their bladder, whether during the day or at night.

However, accidents can still happen. Being engaged in an activity that gives them great pleasure, children can neglect the sensation of urinating, appearing diurnal enuresis. Nocturnal enuresis is more common than diurnal enuresis, it is often primary (the child has never woken up to urinate), but after 7 years most children overcome this situation.

When it is necessary to see a doctor

Despite the benign appearance, medical evaluation, including ultrasound, is indicated to eliminate organic causes (most often malformations) that could favor this situation.

Secondary enuresis (lack of bladder control, after a sufficiently long period of time since it had been obtained) is another reason why medical evaluation by a pediatrician, nephrologist and reno-bladder ultrasound is absolutely necessary. SEE MORE
