5 Tips to keep your baby warm during the winter

The cold weather will still accompany us for a few more months and it is mainly at this time of year that the comfort of the little ones becomes a major concern for parents. A baby is much more fragile than we are, it uncovers itself frequently and cannot tell us when it feels cold or hot. Therefore, it is very important to ensure that they are well protected from low temperatures, to prevent them from getting sick.

First of all, it's important to understand if your baby is really cold. And contrary to common belief, the fact that the little ones have cold hands and feet does not necessarily mean that they are uncomfortable. This is because it is normal for babies, especially newborns, to always have cold extremities. The best area to really feel if your baby is warm is on the back, just below the neck. All you need to do is touch the back of your hand to this spot and you will no longer have any doubts.

Keep the house at a cool temperature

It is normal, during the winter, to resort to heaters, air conditioners or fireplaces to keep the house warm and comfortable. However, when you have a baby, you have to be careful. The temperature in the room where the baby is sleeping must be controlled and must not exceed 20ºC/21ºC: studies show that there is a correlation between sleeping environments above 22ºC and an increased probability of occurrence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. In addition, high temperatures dry the air, which can disturb babies' sensitive airways.

                                          Dress baby in layers

It's called the "onion baby"! The best way to ensure that he stays warm is, without a doubt, to dress him in several layers, which can be easily removed if the baby starts to feel hot. Bodysuit, socks, a warm babygrow and a coat (if necessary) are indispensable and give preference to cotton pieces.

Replace blankets with a sleeping bag

When it's time to put the baby to sleep, the best alternative to keep him warm and make sure he doesn't discover himself is the sleeping bag: it's practical to use, keeps the baby covered, even if he rolls around in the bed, and it's cosy. There are several models on the market, with or without sleeves, and even with removable sleeves. The latter will be ideal, as you can use them all year round. Just put the sleeves in during the coldest months and remove them in the heat.

Avoid using sheets, blankets and duvets while your baby is sleeping, as these items increase the risk of suffocation. If you really want to use it, do it, for example, during daytime naps, when the baby is sleeping under supervision.

                            Opt for quick showers

At this time of year you should avoid taking long baths. To make the bathroom more comfortable, you can warm it up slightly before taking a shower, but don't leave the heater on all the time. The water should also be warm (if using a thermometer, the ideal temperature is around 37°C) to be more pleasant for the baby. Also avoid taking him to another room to dress him, as temperature differences can be unpleasant.

Take extra care with the baby when you go out

Leaving the house with the baby requires extra care during the winter months. Avoid spending a lot of time outdoors, going out during the hours when it is colder (before 10am and after 5pm) and going out after you have bathed your child. During the first few months, and until the baby has had all the main vaccines, it is recommended to avoid crowded places. When you leave the house, don't forget to wrap your baby well with several layers of clothing, as we've seen, and wear a hat, as it's through the neck and head that the baby loses the most heat.
