Proper Use of Diapers
The proper use of diapers is an integral part of caring for your baby. Babies need protection from rashes, and if they occasionally occur, appropriate care.
Babies' skin is very delicate. No matter how careful you are with your baby, from time to time babies rub against each other.
Routine care in the diaper area:
Do not leave the child wet or dirty for a long time. When changing the diaper, clean the skin with water or sanitary napkins; dry it completely. (It is better not to use soap frequently because it strips the protective oil from the baby's skin.)
It is good to leave the child without a diaper (uncovered) for a little while each day to ventilate the skin. Put the diaper under the baby so that the bed does not get wet if he urinates.
There are many kinds of diapers: Disposable diapers of different brands. Cloth diapers that you can wash and in some communities there is a washing service. For many children, it doesn't matter what kind of diaper they wear, disposable or cloth. The important thing is that when the child gets dirty, change the diaper as soon as possible. Use Desitin (zinc oxide), A and D ointment, or Vaseline to protect the skin from urine. Do not wear plastic pants.
In case the child rubs:
Leave the child without a diaper as long as possible.
Try to change her diaper as soon as possible when she urinates or soils herself.
Use Desitin (zinc oxide) A and D ointment or Vaseline to protect the skin from urine and stool.
Use wet wipes or soap and water to change diapers?
The most modern wet wipes are made of a “non-woven”, soaked in an aqueous or oily solution. These solutions are typically enriched with emollients , surfactants , and may contain additives and fragrances.
Because they have an aqueous base, a preservative is used to avoid bacterial and fungal contamination of the material.
Some studies found that there was no significant change in the periurethral bacterial flora (around the urethra – channel through which urine passes) using wet wipes when compared to traditional cleaning with soap and water.
According to the Consensus on baby Skin Care for Newborns of the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (2015), wet wipes have already been linked to irritating and allergic processes, but the evolution in understanding the physiology, microbiology and immunology of the diaper area has favored the development of products that are increasingly suitable for children.
It is known that condoms and fragrances used in wet wipes may be related to allergic reactions at the site of their use.
In conclusion, the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics recommends that cleaning the diaper area can be done with soap and water, which is recommended by most pediatricians, but also with wet wipes that use modern technology (with less chemical products, without perfume, without alcohol or even with Syndets ).
Therefore, gentle drying of the skin after cleansing is recommended, that is, without rubbing. The application of a barrier cream (such as zinc oxide-based creams) will promote the formation of a protective film that will prevent the action of enzymes on the skin (contained in urine and feces), and will limit friction in the area.
It is also advised in this document to always use barrier creams to prevent diaper dermatitis, and not just when there are already signs of irritation in the area.
Creams containing medications (nystatin, corticoids and antibacterials) should not be used routinely, only when there is evidence of infection or inflammation and with medical advice.
Call the doctor if:
The pinkness does not improve despite all the indicated treatments. It is necessary to examine the baby in case of infection. We frequently find infections such as those called Candida (yeast) or Staph (staphylicoccus) in babies.see more
