You probably now have your own strategy for dealing with diaper rash, but it never hurts to have some ideas on how to treat it. If you haven't come across diaper rash yet, you're either very lucky or very good at prevention!
Change early and often
Frequent diaper changes keep your baby clean and healthy. Whenever your baby needs a change, make sure you respond to her needs. Rinse her well during each diaper change, and avoid scented wipes or soap, which can irritate her sensitive skin.
Avoid baby powder or powder
This product can actually accumulate in baby's skin folds and hold in moisture, which can help bacteria grow and cause an infection. Instead, use an ointment like petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to form a protective barrier on your baby's sensitive skin.
Change brands of diapers
Some brands of diapers can irritate your baby's sensitive skin. Try super absorbent disposable diapers, or any diaper with absorbent gelling material. Cloth diapers can cause more frequent rashes than disposables, so try to change them or at least change the detergent you wash them with.
Allow to air dry
Exposing sensitive skin to fresh air is very effective in helping to clear up diaper rash. Try to wear looser-fitting diapers to increase circulation, and to have certain times when the diaper can stay off for extended periods. Allowing your baby to sleep soundly can also help – just be sure to put a plastic sheet under it for any unavoidable accidents.
Soak in the Bath
Let your baby sit in a warm bath for about 10 minutes, 3 times a day. Add some baking soda to the baby's tub, but be sure not to bathe him until his umbilical cord has fallen off. You should also make sure to blot it, rather than rub it in, as this could irritate their sensitive skin.
