Can pregnant women use

cleaning products?

Soap, detergent, and surface cleaners are generally safe for pregnant women to use. Already deep baby cleaning products, such as candida (bleach), disinfectant, tile and stove cleaner or products to perforate the environment can release toxic substances into the air. Once these substances are inhaled by the pregnant woman, they can cross the placenta and reach the baby.

In the few studies in which this relationship was observed, it was noted that, in the children of women who used cleaning products regularly and for long periods of time during pregnancy, including Candida and other disinfectants, the children tended to have more lung problems and more infections than lower respiratory tract (such as pneumonia and bronchitis).

One way to avoid contact with possible exposure to toxic chemicals is to clean the house with more natural products, such as vinegar, lemon, baking soda, coconut soap, among others.

Other cleaning tips are:

  • When using a manufactured product, read the instructions and precautions on the package - and follow what is recommended.

  • Never mix cleaning products such as ammonia with bleach. Inhaling the fumes that result from this combination is very dangerous for anyone and can be fatal.

  • Beware of cleaning products that are not industrialized, sold door-to-door or in informal trade. As they are not regulated, there is no guarantee that there will be no hazardous substances. And since there is no packaging, the risk of creating poisonous concoctions is greater.

  • If you really need to use a stronger solvent, open doors and windows to ventilate the room well, so you don't inhale the fumes while cleaning. The ideal is to ask someone else in the house to do this type of service at this stage.

  • Put on cleaning gloves to avoid direct contact of products with the skin.

If your job involves dealing with toxic or hazardous chemicals, talk to your boss or employer to discuss a temporary role change while you are pregnant, which is guaranteed by law for unhealthy environments.
