Get to know the possible reasons for cough in children.

WHY DO WE COUGH?

Cough is a physiological reflex that works as a natural defense mechanism of the respiratory system. Its function is to expel secretions from the upper airways, preventing them from accumulating, causing obstruction, difficulty breathing or even infections.

THE REASONS FOR COUGHING IN CHILDREN

Cough is a major concern for parents and one of the main reasons to visit the pediatrician. The cough can be acute , when it lasts less than 4 weeks, or chronic , when the symptoms go beyond 4 weeks.

The main cause of acute cough are viral infections that attack the upper airways (nose and throat). These inflammations give rise to secretions, which are expelled with coughing, in order to clear the airways.

WARNING SIGNS

  • Parents should be aware of these signs in a child with a cough:

  • bluish lips or skin

  • high-pitched noise when breathing in (sometimes preceded by a moment of uncontrollable, repetitive coughing)

  • difficulty breathing

  • High fever

  • not being able to sleep at night

  • refuse to feed

  • cough worsening from day to day and prolonged for more than 10 days

HOW TO TREAT COUGH?

You should make an appointment with your pediatrician if you recognize any of the warning signs. It is important to have an evaluation done to rule out any other symptoms.

  • Assess whether the child feels well and is able to expel secretions normally.

  • Reinforce fluid intake, especially water.

  • Unclog the nose with saline solution.

  • Avoid places with tobacco smoke.

  • Do not give cough syrups to the child without talking to your pediatrician. If you want to see more
